Stephen R. Covey spent his career inspiring millions to make their lives more effective, compassionate, and meaningful. Near the end of his life, however, Covey felt there was a final component to his work which he wanted to inspire others with— “live life in crescendo”— which was his personal mission statement.

He asked his daughter Cynthia Haller Covey to collaborate on a book based on what would turn out to be his last big idea—the “Crescendo Mentality.” This mindset urges us to use whatever we have—time, talents, resources, gifts, passion, money, and influence—to enrich the lives of the people around us, including family, neighborhood, community, and the world. Whether you have retired, experienced great success, gone through a life-changing setback, or are stuck in a stagnant midlife, this mindset will help you realize that your greatest work is truly be ahead of you.

That father/daughter collaboration would eventually become LIVE LIFE IN CRESCENDO: Your Most Important Work is Always Ahead of You (September 27th, 2022/$27.99 hardcover) by Stephen R. Covey and Cynthia Covey Haller.

“We actively worked on the book together for three years, and I met with him regularly to record his thoughts and ideas. He always encouraged and even pushed me to finish my part, which was holding the book up, yet he understood my time limitations,” Cynthia writes. “While I deeply shared his passion on the subject and collected material and wrote when I could, regrettably my part of the book was still mostly unfinished when he unexpectedly left us. Over the last several years, I finished writing the stories, examples, and commentary that were my part of the project, as he had requested.”

LIVE LIFE IN CRESCENDO addresses the vital questions that occupied Covey’s thinking toward the end of his life:

  • How can you live your best life no matter your age or stage?
  • How can you pull yourself out of a stagnant midlife?
  • How can you continue to contribute if you have already been successful?
  • How do you best respond to life-challenging setbacks?
  • How do you live your best life in the second half of life, when you may be thinking of retiring and settling down.

The book provides Covey’s answers to these questions, outlining his vision for every age and stage of life. Using the musical analogy of crescendo, in the same way that music builds on the previous notes, life too, builds on the past and unfolds in the future.

Haller said, “My father urged everyone to “live life in crescendo,” continually growing in learning, influence, and contribution. No matter your situation or age and stage of life, it is essential to approach life with the belief that your most important work is always ahead of you.”

LIVE LIFE IN CRESCENDO is a life-changing and life-affirming book that befits the generosity and wisdom of the late Stephen R. Covey.
